THE IMPORTANCE OF FOCUS IN BASKETBALL

Instilling discipline,  as mentioned in my prior post, in any sports activity is very essential. No matter how talented and gifted a player is yet if he is devoid of the sense of discipline in himself then everything will be in vain. To add to that, any player as well needs to practice focus aside from being disciplined. Being focus means one is able to concentrate solely on his present activity. In basketball and in any other game, one's ability to stay focus counts so much since it allows any player to see everything that is happening on the hardcourt either on actual or  practice game.

Focus as well is related to one's ability to develop and maintain mental toughness in oneself. Negative contributors such as vices and other extra curricular activities must be set aside so that one's goal of success will be attained. Basketball is a tough game and one will surely fail if he allows himself to be distracted by unnecessary activities aside from practicing and playing. We can mention prominent names in the game such as Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabaar, Larry Bird, Shin Dong Pa, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Samboy Lim  and many more. Among them, positive qualities and traits are present such as passion, self confidence, perseverance and those I mentioned like discipline and focus. For a long time, they have excelled in the game for they were able to focus on the game. As human as we are, there were chapters in their lives that they also encountered challenges, problems and other forms of distractions however they continued to emerge as winners since they are disciplined and focused.

Any aspiring player should consistently bear in mind that to reach the top, focus should be one of the top priorities among others. Be present on the now  moment in practice and in actual games. Learn to think of just one thing in any given moment. Finally discipline and focus mean SUCCESS in the game.

BASKETBALL FUN FACTS

Even when I was still a young kid, I was already a sports buff. Among so many sports, basketball has become my favorite even at  a  young age. When we were still young and during break time in school, I and my classmates used to play it even just for a limited time. Inspired by its wonderful world, I religiously followed its every professional game in our country on television and on sports magazines. It was so famous that everywhere one can witness both old and young alike playing it on various kinds of courts such as cemented, asphalted, etc.

Hence with such as background, it is with enormous joy to share with you some of its interesting facts.

  • James Naismith, a teacher at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, is credited with inventing basketball in 1891.
  • The first “hoops” were actually just peach baskets and the first backboards were made of wire.
  • The game became an official Olympic event at the Summer Games in Berlin, Germany in 1936.
  • Two leagues called the National Basketball League (NBL) and the Basketball Association of America (BAA) merged after the 1948-49 season to become today's National Basketball Association (NBA).
  • The Boston Celtics have won the most NBA championships (17), including seven straight from 1960 to 1966.
  • Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who played 20 seasons in the NBA, holds the record for most points scored in a career with 38,387.
  • On March 2, 1962, Philadelphia center Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in one game against New York. That is the most one player has ever scored in one game.
  • Current Atlanta Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens has won more basketball games than any other coach.
  • The American Basketball Association (ABA) was a 10-team rival league to the NBA that began play in the 1967-68 season and folded nine years later after the 1975-76 season. Four current NBA teams – Indiana, Denver, New York, and San Antonio – originated in the ABA.
  • The NBA instituted the three-pointer before the 1979-80 season, an idea it borrowed from the ABA.
  • The Chicago Bulls have won all six NBA Finals in which they've appeared.

My 2013 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix Experience

Grand Prix motor racing has its roots in organised automobile racing that began in France as far back as 1894. It quickly evolved from a simple road race from one town to the next, to endurance tests for car and driver. Innovation and the drive of competition soon saw speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour (160 km/h), but because the races were held on open roads there were frequent accidents with the resulting fatalities to both drivers and spectators.
Grand Prix motor racing eventually evolved into formula racing, and Formula One can be seen as its direct descendant. Each event of the Formula One World Championships is still called a Grand Prix. Formula One is still referred to as Grand Prix racing.—–source: WIKIPEDIA-the free encyclopedia

Being able to watch the racing live was such a remarkable experience. Awesome —that is how would I describe my experience. Just hearing live the sounds of those extra powerful machine made me feel the excitement of the race. The field was well represented by those world favorites such as Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull teammate and Australian MArk Webber, Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton and others. Aside from those breathtaking races, other noteworthy activities were prepared such as concerts at the Legends Lane Stage. Aside from the superb performance of those guests bands, other events took place such as industry and innovation Precint featuring the Education Expo.

There was also the V8 village wherein I was able to get up close to the V8 garages, team and facilities. Finally, I was mesmerized by the extra ordinary stunts by two motorcycle stuntmen. They were so superb in their tricks and the crowd was so well entertained especially by their somersaults attempts. I would also invite you to share whatever interesting experience you have on my blog.

ENGAGE YOURSELF IN ANY SPORTS ACTIVITY

Be aware of the importance of keeping fit  in our life. Being fit means staying active in our day to day living.  In order to meet this need, one possible way is by engaging in whatever sports activity. When we discuss about any sports activity, it goes beyond the limit of merely strenuous activity since we can also involve ourselves in a sporting activity  that only requires the faculty of our brain. Nevertheless, even if it is solely the brain that is getting pre- occupied in that activity such as chess but somehow,it still allows the doer  to actively participate and to use his/her faculties in stimulating his/her body.

“Engaging in natural health remedies such as physical education and sport activities are encouraged by health and nutrition experts today. The increasing number of health risks and conditions that are experienced by most people today, young or old, create concern about the impact of lifestyle and diet factors to increasing those risk factors. If you wanted to adapt a change in lifestyle, make sure to learn how you can incorporate those activities in your daily life and experience their benefits.”

Commerce, majoring in Sports Management and has administered junior and senior sporting programs for over 10 years in Australia and the United Kingdom. Her passion is to see all children healthy.”

What Janelle Farley mentioned above is a clear manifestation that engaging oneself in any sports activity brings bountiful psitive outcome to the doer. The world of sports as well goes beyond the differences in sex, culture, age, and the like. Finally, being active means living a balanced life with both mind and body put into consideration. And our healthy lifestyle brings multiple positive outcome to the body.

WHAT IS SPORTS?

Just to give us an overview on what is sports, I share below one of its definitions from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. With this information, one will further understand the meaning, characteristics, early recognition, governance and a lot more on sports.

Sport
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sport (or, primarily in North America, sports) is all forms of competitive physical activity which,[1] through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and provide entertainment to participants.[2] Hundreds of sports exist, from those requiring only two participants, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals.

Sport is generally recognised as activities which are based in physical athleticism or physical dexterity, with the largest major competitions such as the Olympic Games admitting only sports meeting this definition,[3] and other organisations such as the Council of Europe using definitions precluding activities without a physical element from classification as sports.[2] However, a number of competitive, but non-physical, activities claim recognition as mind sports. The International Olympic Committee (through ARISF) recognises both chess and bridge as bona fide sports, and SportAccord, the international sports federation association, recognises five non-physical sports,[4][5] although limits the amount of mind games which can be admitted as sports.[1]

Sports are usually governed by a set of rules or customs, which serve to ensure fair competition, and allow consistent adjudication of the winner. Winning can be determined by physical events such as scoring goals or crossing a line first, or by the determination of judges who are scoring elements of the sporting performance, including objective or subjective measures such as technical performance or artistic impression.

In organised sport, records of performance are often kept, and for popular sports, this information may be widely announced or reported in sport news. In addition, sport is a major source of entertainment for non-participants, with spectator sports drawing large crowds to venues, and reaching wider audiences through sports broadcasting.

BE HEALTHY EVERYDAY

Every new day is always considered as a gift. Thus we are also invited to keep fit everyday and we can do it by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Vices such as drugs, smoke, unbalanced lifestyle etc should be avoided. Instead we should include a daily work out that can assure us to have a healthy mind and body consistently.

Great people are known for their mental and physical discipline. We should consider imitating their examples in our life. People like Mahatma Ghandi, Mother Teresa, Kobe Bryant, Jet Li and many more can serve well as models for us on maintaining a healthy lifestyle everyday. May we all achieve our dream of enjoying life to its fullest.

Discipline On Sports

Sports can enable anyone to develop morals, discipline and positivism in life. There is always a constant two sides on any sports- a winner and a loser. It feels good to emerge as a winner -it boosts one’s morale yet in losing with humility, there is also a value that one can get. Much things that we can share on the idea of  losing yet what I would like to dwell at this time ont he idea of instilling discipline in ones participation on any sports.

According to one source, ” Discipline is the ability for an individual to have self-restraint and to behave and practice in a strict, controlled manner. Whilst discipline is an action, it starts with a decision in the mind and can therefore be positively encouraged and influenced. In sport an athlete needs to be disciplined in the technical, tactical, mental, physical as well as lifestyle areas of development. ”  This is borowed from Secrets of Winning Coaches Revealed

From this source, one can conclude that  discipline  indeed is very essential so as to succeed in any sporting endeavor. There could be ups and downs in our life yet if we have made discipline a part of our system, I firmly believe that no matter how crucial any stage we are in, we will still  emerge and always be triumphant And this goes down to one’s ability to instill  tranquility in his/her mind. Both mind and body have to practice constant harmony so as to reach a stage wherein discipline can become an integral part of one’s life. Can we then ask ourselves this question, " Is discipline on any daily undertaking a part of our life?"
